What is pottery?


@ Pottery is vessels that are formed from clay or kneaded stone powder and are fired in a kiln. Most pottery is glazed for waterproofing and decorative effect. Depending on the raw materials used, whether it is glazed or unglazed, the firing temperature, and the purpose, pottery can be divided into five categories: earthenware, pottery(toki and sekki),  porcelain, and tile. In Tsuboya, pottery is called "yachimun" in Okinawan dialect.


Classification of Pottery (Yakimono )

Eartheneare Formed from clay and baked at 700-800.Porous. Unglazed.

Formed from clay and baked at 1000-1200 . Slightly porous. Glazed.

Formed from clay and baked hard at 1200-1300 . Non-porous/ Waterproof Glazed/unglazed.
Porcelain Formed from feldspar and kaolin and baked at 1300-1400 . Non-porous/ Waterproof Glazed Tile Formed from clay into the fixed style and baked at 900-1200.
Tile Formed from clay into the fixed style and baked at 900-1200 . Porous Mainly used for roofing

 Pottery vessels vary in form, size, and use. They can be classified into groups such as dishes, plates, bowls, basins, pots, jars, vases and bottles.
